Our history

Proud in history and culture.

A true collaboration between local basketball visionaries & legends to create an inclusive and family friendly environment where all are welcome.

Glenorchy Spartans Basketball club is unique in its formation and makeup. The diversity behind the evolution of the club is what sets it apart with inclusivity a key backbone in formulating an environment where every member of the community can find a place and outlet to be involved in the game of basketball.

Four basketball associations / clubs have joined forces over numerous decades to form Glenorchy Spartans Basketball Association (GBA) - Tasmanian Lithuanian Sports Club (Perkunas), Moonah Basketball Association, Breakers Basketball Club and Northern Revellers Basketball Club (Revs).

Perkunas

Established in 1958, 'Perkunas' is a Lithuanian-formed club with a long history in southern Tasmania. The Tasmanian Lithuanian Sports Klub (TLSK)  & Lithuanian community became one of the mainstays of the local basketball scene.

Moonah Basketball

The Moonah Basketball Association was formed by Kevin Baddiley and associates operating out of Moonah Stadium providing senior mens and women's competitions for the majority of the 80s and 90s. Moonah Basketball became the major social league competition in Hobart before going forces and now operates as GBA Sundays Social Roster.

Breakers Basketball

The Breakers Basketball Club was founded by Peter Stanwix and the Stanwix family and participated across both senior and junior competitions in Hobart. Established out of a need to value people from all walks of life, Breakers built a very successful senior program with their men's teams often ranked amongst the best in Tasmania.

Moonah Basketball

The Moonah Basketball Association was formed by Kevin Baddiley and associates operating out of Moonah Stadium providing senior mens and women's competitions for the majority of the 80s and 90s.

Glenorchy Revs

The Revellers Junior Basketball Club was founded by local basketball legend Tim Leedham born out of a desire to give all junior players (regardless of skill) an opportunity to play basketball. Revs became the fastest growing junior club in southern Tasmania.

Glenorchy Revellers Junior Club merged with GBA Sundays and Moonah Basketball to become the Glenorchy Basketball Association - bringing together seniors, juniors, all abilities and social competitions under the one banner.
